  • Serpentine
  • 1 1/4 d x 2 1/4 w x 3 h (in)

  • Carved by hand in Kinngait (Formally Cape Dorset) Nunavut
  • All our Inuit sculptures are carved from a single piece of stone, locally sourced from the carvers community, most commonly Serpentine or Argillite. These stones are carvable but are significantly harder than soapstone.
  • The Inukshuk is an important image in the far north. Above the tree line there are few landscape markers, the land is flat and mostly snow covered tundra. Inukshuit are stacks of stones built in the rough shape of a person. Traditionally a Nunavut custom, the Inukshuk has many uses: to mark a water source or Caribou migration path. Some are used as food caches, or to aid in hunting with less people on misty fall days. The layout of the stones has specific significance which can be read by the viewer. In recent years it has come to symbolize northern resilience, and can now be seen throughout Canada.
