Hand carved with a raven design in Yukon by Eugene Alfred
Painted and carved yellow cedar paddle
13 1/2 l x 3 w x 1 d (in)
Eugene Alfred is a artist/carver of Northern Tutchone and Tlingit ancestry, and belongs to the Crow Clan of Selkirk First Nation, located in Pelly Crossing, Yukon.
Paddles are an important part of Tlingit culture. They represent the connection to the waterways that their ancestors paddled down to come inland many generations ago. Traditionally these paddles were full size but used for dancing and ceremonies, not as functional paddles. In modern times paddles are often miniature and are created as visual art for the wall.
Raven's are important creatures to Yukon First Nation's. Raven is a trickster who brought the sun to earth, and therefore created life. Ravens are revered in Yukon First Nation culture
